“I was wondering if you were going to make time for your favorite brother,” Rome said as he strode through the door of Ash’s office. “Your jailer out there made it seem like you couldn’t spare even a minute.”

He really couldn’t spare a minute.

Despite the early hour he’d woken up at, he’d been late to work (because of breakfast and hanging by Mel’s desk and not wanting to leave) and had needed Maddie to work her magic.

She was more than an assistant.

She was…magic.

And she had worked her magic to push back his meetings and calls while making certain no one was pissed and he still would get everything he needed done.

So, Ash didn’t have a moment for pesky brothers.

Because he’d be undoing all that magic of Maddie’s.

And then she’d be pissed off at him—mostly because of the schedule, but also because she couldn’t stand Rome and how he strolled into Ash’s office at regular intervals (thus completely disrupting her carefully planned out schedule).

Suffice to say, Ash tried to avoid the last.

Because Maddie pissed at him was something he really, really didn’t like.

Maddie angry with him meant conference calls scheduled at five o’clock on a Friday evening and his favorite pens on back-order (according to the person who bought them—Ms. Magical Maddie). It meant coffee missing from the breakroom and meetings through lunch and red-eye flights.

So no, Ash shouldn’t be watching Rome walking into his office right then.

But Maddie understood exactly how important his family was to him, so he knew she would make an allowance.

This once.

Plus, maybe he could convince a certain green-eyed beauty to make another swirl cake. He’d beg forgiveness—and bribe—Maddie with a piece.

Maddie rolled her chair over, leaned back so that she could meet his eyes.

Right.

He’d give her a big ass piece.

“What’s up, Rome?” he asked.

Something crossed his brother’s face—something serious and filled with more than enough pain that Ash immediately lost the blip of irritation at being interrupted and needing to bribe Maddie with swirl cake he didn’t want to give up and focused on his sibling.

Who was looking…broken.

Fuck.

“Do you have time for lunch?” he asked quietly. And slightly vulnerably.

Something that had Ash tensing.

His brother didn’t do quiet. Or vulnerable.

Shit.

Ash really didn’t have time for lunch.

Like really didn’t.

But his family was more important than work, even if he’d been busting his ass for his company for the last decade, even if its success was still largely dependent on him.

His dad was gone, but he’d taught Ash that nothing was more important than family, and that was something Ash wholeheartedly agreed with. So yeah. He’d make the time, get Maddie to shift some things around (and definitely receive a bribe in return for her hard work), go to lunch, and kick ass for the rest of the day, working as late as he needed to, and—

“Ash?”

He’d opened his mouth to ask where Rome wanted to go, but Maddie calling his name had him shifting his focus back through the office door.

“Your eleven o’clock just canceled.” She gave him a pointed look that told Ash she was already working her magic.
